It's Valentine's season!

My personal favorite "holiday".

Why?
I was married on Valentine's Day in 1997. The marriage didn't last, but I did.

V is for Valentine's Day, but also Victory Day!
Here's to life beyond the tears! Never give up ...
There is always something better over the horizon.
... also ...
It marks the official end of the post-XMAS/New Year's doldrums. It only gets better from Valentine's Day onwards!
... and ...

...- let's not forget ...
liberal use of pink and red are not only allowed, but positively encouraged.
Now THAT's a holiday I can get behind!

I've been meaning to post here for days and days ... I've just been so involved with my other blog, The Daily Corgi. I love it, because I adore Corgis, but it's sort of become the blog that ate my life.
Corgi puppy.

Funny thing about having your blog gain lots of readers ... I've got about 5,000 hits a month on that blog, and a facebook fan page for it with over 800 people signed on ... all of which is great, but oh geez! The discipline it takes to keep up and make it interesting, even though it's all about the same breed (well, there are two types of Corgis) every day.

I think it works because Corgis are the planet's most adorable, delightful dogs. I don't have one myself, but I am a superFAN! To me all dogs are terrific, but they are at the top of the class. I lost my heart to them twenty-plus years ago.

Days and nights of late have also been about getting used to my new apartment, helping my cat do the same, feathering the nest on limited funds but lots of ideas ... sometimes too many ideas. I want to do ten different things in one room. Creative waffling. Not always as fun as it sounds!

Yesterday I found myself at Michael's in the silk flowers section, ooohing and ahhhing over all the colorful tulips. Spring is on the way. I believe it, even though it's a winter wonderland here in my corner of the world. As soon as I've got my scanner hooked up again, I have to display a couple of Easter cards I bought there ... so sweet, Victorian repro, die cut, some glitter, just the sweetest. And Michael's prices -- $1.00 each -- insane.

Michael's, you ROCK!

new blog: farm and fru fru

Sharon, a farmer's wife who lives in a "male majority crop circle of craziness" on a dairy farm, has started a sweet blog at http://www.farmandfrufru.blogspot.com. I'm going to follow her as she "lives creatively ... with cows". Her writer's voice and artist's eye are worth a look.

Good luck, Sharon! Keep posting those wonderful pictures, and let's get some Corgi ones too ;).

Olive

Tomorrow on my other blog The Daily Corgi, I'll be featuring a Boston-based Corgi named Olive. There'll be plenty of photos, but I like how this drawing captures her essence.

It's absolutely untrue that every Corgi looks alike ... remarkably, they are all different, a fact I've come to understand very well from profiling a brand new Corgi every weekday.

The one thing they all have in common? Extraordinary adorableness.

Check it out!

serious beauty: papaya art

Back in late August I did a post on a couple of greeting cards from Papaya Art, and recently re-visited the site to noodle around for other goodies ...

... and I was handsomely rewarded! These are from their range of magnets. Just $4 each. I would love any or all of them on my refrigerator.
Swoooooon.

Sproost's style quiz: Arts & Crafts?

Just finished taking Sproost's Style Quiz (well, I actually took it twice because I didn't believe the results the first time), and I am apparently inclined towards the Arts & Crafts style -- OK, I admit I love it, although it is the complete anti-thesis of pink and girly -- and I'm also partial towards the Nantucket style.

Both are clean lined and not festooned with "stuff" ... and I suppose I am uncomortable with too much "stuff" in a room, a fact I'm discovering as I finish up the making of my living room. I want space, I don't want a lot of stuff crowding me in, I want air and enough roominess (not exactly easy in a small room). But I also want warmth and some feeling of tradition, with enough light, not too much heaviness.

It's true I've been fascinated by the Arts and Crafts style for a long time. To me, this style will stand the test of time -- it already has -- and although some might call it too masculine overall, I don't think it is. Think of William Morris's aesthetic ... I saw an exhibition of his work at the MFA (Boston) years ago and just fell in love with it.

As for the Nantucket part -- well, I have developed a love and appreciation for the seaside, somewhat later in life. Fleeting summers in New England will do that to you if you hang around long enough. All that delicious light in abundance, the feeling of standing at the edge of the continent with nothing obstructing the blue horizon, the sweep of sand and tides ... it all sings to me, loud and clear.

Still, I'm not about to give up the salon pink idea for my bedroom.

Maybe it's just a phase, but I need to go through it.

Pink has so many hues and moods.

Did you know that pink was, at one time, considered a gentleman's color?

Surprise, surprise, surprising pink!

Enough navel gazing for one day.

Sometimes you've got to pull yourself out of your heap of self-analysis as best you can and just start doing something.

Anything.

Still in a funk over the move, I should really just get out and take a walk in the snow at dusk (which is right now) but I am mired in the silence and amorphous sadness of the day. And the sofa.

Hate hearing the cat still crying mournfully every now and then. I'm not a Mom but this cuts me to the quick. I feel so guilty ...

Glad to see some comments on my recent posts. Makes me feel like I exist. (Is this getting too melancholy?) Planning on checking my mail and doing some laundry. Might also unpack a few boxes.

Hoping not to sit here gazing at the holes I drilled in the wall in a failed attempt to hang curtain rods. I should look at some lovely blogs instead. That always makes me feel better.

Perhaps I shouldn't have watched as much of that "rescue me/help me/I'm just a pup or kitten" commercial as I did earlier. For me, that is preaching to the choir.

I know! I know! I know!

At some point before bed I will haul out my February issue of Romantic Homes ... my favorite holiday is up for celebrating ... VALENTINE's DAY!

Love that.

Hope your weekend is going well. I know I am going to feel better eventually. Like most other things, it's just a matter of time.

I have to hope the same will happen for the cat.

Depression just plain sucks. That's all there is to it.

p.s. Kim, as regards your limited use of pink: is there a closet in the house you can turn into your personal pink space? Paint the inside pink, hang images of the things your husband would hate to have to look at everyday, and when you're done with your pink fix, close the door (which you have also painted pink inside, mais oui). Oh, and you could hang a pink chandelier from the ceiling in there too! There are ways to live around the maleness ... it's wonderful in many ways, the maleness, but we have to have these sanctuaries of our own making, no matter how small they may be. Even a little space can hold big dreams.

The new nest.

It's been two weeks since I moved in to my new apartment. Living alone now, just me and the cat, in a little one bedroom place with lots of West facing windows and all-vinyl floors. Even in the bedroom.

Rugs, people, I am craving RUGS!

I officially have too much stuff to display in my little kitchen, which is crammed full of cabinetry. Some awfully cute things are staying in storage ... that's the way it is. I cannot overwhelm a small room with tons of knickknacks, can I?

No, no, no. The rooster curtains are definitely "go", however.

I'm watching David Letterman as I type this (I'm talented that way) and a young actress has just come out from behind the curtains wearing what looks like a very tight top with opaque black hose. I guess if you're 22 you can get away with this, but why doesn't she just wear a sign on her forehead that says "free samples"?

I know, that's not fair. And I'm not jealous at ALL.

Anyway ... it is definitely weird living alone again, and having my own apartment. The cat and I take turns freaking out about it ... new place, no roommate, no other cats, we have only one another for company.

This is either a recipe for bliss or the beginnings of a card game known commonly as Old Maid. Can you technically become an Old Maid when you have been married and divorced? I like to think not. But you can still go for Crazy Cat Lady.

The living room is blue. Yikes, BLUE. It's the first room you see when you enter the apartment, you literally step right into it, and I decided to just go very conservative with it. I've got a large braided rug and the curtains (when I can finally figure out the whole rod situation) will be subtle, probably a sandy, muted check.

Again, I don't want to overwhelm a small space with TOO MUCH. But the Breyer horses (2) and dogs (3) are going on display. I always feel better when there are images of and/or actual animals around.

The biggest room in the place is the bedroom... and it is going to be pink. Shades of pink, I ought to say. If a bedroom were Audrey Hepburn, it would be the bedroom I'm going to have ... very feminine and discerning and intelligent and lovely.

That's the plan, anyway.

What is there to say about getting used to a new home, other than it takes time and oftentimes it pretty much sucks? Mostly the moving part, but the unpacking and settling in ... and the cat crying pitifully in the night because she is homesick and doesn't understand why all of this is happening ...

So this is a happy and a sad time, all at once. I am going to have a good two days to sit here and simmer in it, however, as there's a major storm moving into the Northeast. Snow is still romantic, but by March I will be cursing it.

At least I don't have to shovel!

Thank God for Netflix and the unlimited streaming video.

And diet gineger ale (gotta stock up before The Big One hits!)

Over and out, mon amies.

blog happy: two-fer

Woweeeee!

I am on a blue streak, I guess ... and since I am not generally a fan of blue, this is surprising even me. Especially me. Well, only me.

This gorgeous collage comes from the fabbity-fab blog Absolutely Ladylike, which I found by way of the awesome Felinofelice.

I am convinced that the world would be a much less interesting place without all these blogs ... the internet really IS good for something!

Happy New Year ... let's make it a beautiful one!

Lilly blue!

After a month and a half of red and green and gold ...

I've got some serious cravings for beachy, breezy, Lilly Pulitzer-y turquoise!

Doesn't that look WONDERFUL right about now?
What are you craving, color-wise?
