Just finished taking Sproost's Style Quiz (well, I actually took it twice because I didn't believe the results the first time), and I am apparently inclined towards the Arts & Crafts style -- OK, I admit I love it, although it is the complete anti-thesis of pink and girly -- and I'm also partial towards the Nantucket style.
Both are clean lined and not festooned with "stuff" ... and I suppose I am uncomortable with too much "stuff" in a room, a fact I'm discovering as I finish up the making of my living room. I want space, I don't want a lot of stuff crowding me in, I want air and enough roominess (not exactly easy in a small room). But I also want warmth and some feeling of tradition, with enough light, not too much heaviness.
It's true I've been fascinated by the Arts and Crafts style for a long time. To me, this style will stand the test of time -- it already has -- and although some might call it too masculine overall, I don't think it is. Think of William Morris's aesthetic ... I saw an exhibition of his work at the MFA (Boston) years ago and just fell in love with it.
As for the Nantucket part -- well, I have developed a love and appreciation for the seaside, somewhat later in life. Fleeting summers in New England will do that to you if you hang around long enough. All that delicious light in abundance, the feeling of standing at the edge of the continent with nothing obstructing the blue horizon, the sweep of sand and tides ... it all sings to me, loud and clear.
Still, I'm not about to give up the salon pink idea for my bedroom.
Maybe it's just a phase, but I need to go through it.
I took the test and was surprised to find out that I was mountain lodge style with arts and crafts coming in second. I don't think of myself as a lodge type, but they didn't have any overly girly room or pink to choose from in those pictures. I think that's why. I am, however, a huge fan of the arts and crafts style and a devotee of Frank Lloyd Wright. Twyla
